For every media outlet, there can only be one lead story. And, for all of the growth that’s happened in the online video industry over the last decade, there’s little argument that in terms of overall buzz, advancements in social networking regularly edge us out. Twitter facilitated revolutions throughout the Middle East; online video showed us the gritty aftermath. Facebook transformed the way people interact with one another; YouTube proved that one small child getting his finger bitten by an even smaller child could bring precious seconds of entertainment to millions.
Robin to Batman. Tonto to the Lone Ranger. Chuy to Chelsea Handler: important, necessary, but never quite the star of the show.
I’ll throw my name into the large pool of prognosticators who predict that all of that is about to change, and...
I'm not sure I've ever looked forward to a year like I'm looking forward to 2012. On the personal note, I've just gotten engaged, so I'm planning a wedding, and we're expecting our first child (a girl) in June. That alone will make this a great year!
But you probably don't care about all of that. You're here for the videos, and you want to know what you can expect from MyPod over the next few months. Well, we have a lot planned:
New content. Clearly, we didn't do the best job of keeping the content up to date toward the end of 2011. But that's about to change. We currently have over 2,000 hours of new content just waiting to be added to the network, with more content being added to the queue all the time. Our goal is to have brand new videos to offer each day, to keep the site fresh and exciting.
New Pod...
When enough years have passed, you can look back at them and recognize that each year has its own personality. I mean that for the world in general, and on an individual level. That’s partly why I’m conflicted about seeing 2011 go. On the one hand, it wasn’t exactly a banner year in the history of the planet – war, famine, upheaval, the price of a paperclip (anyone know what movie I’m referencing?) it seemed like bad news was waiting for us at every turn. Clearly, from that perspective, everyone should have breathed a sigh of relief when the ball finally dropped.
But as far as MyPod is concerned, 2011 was so exciting, it’s hard to not be a little disappointed that the year is over. 2011 was our first full year in business, and, like many paths, we ended up someplace far different – and far better – than...
MyPod Studios has barely been up and running for four months, and most of that time has been spent setting up the database, gathering the content, hiring the right employees, and making sure this crazy site actually works. We've just started marketing it and driving traffic - more than expected, but barely enough at this point to be considered a driving force in the world of online entertainment. Still, though, for some reason, that hasn't stopped me from making an almost uncountable number of changes to just about everything on the entire network.
In the last two weeks alone, we've launched our new Home page, and then set right about updating and revising it. The landing pages, which haven't even been made public yet, have gone through at least three evolutions in the past five days, and we're planning a complete restructuring...
According to Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google, people generate as much content every two days as they did from the beginning of human history through the year 2003.
I'm not really sure if that's true, or how exactly Mr. Schmidt came to that conclusion, but if it's even half true, it's truly an amazing statistic. Over the last year, as we've been building out the MyPod Studios network, I've been amazed at the amount of video content that's out there for us to choose from. Comedies, dramas, how-to videos, fitness, cooking, advice, and the just plain ridiculous - you name it, and there's a mountain of video footage waiting to be watched. When we first got into this game, I was a little worried that we wouldn't be able to find enough videos to include. As it turns out, my bigger challenge was trying to weed through it all...
So here I am. For the last 15 or more years, I've spent my career creating somewhat traditional campaigns and developing brand strategies for clients of my marketing agency. Who'd have guessed that almost over night, that would all change, and I'd be here manning the helm of my own online video network? Definitely not me, that's for sure! But I have to admit that while I don't always embrace change (who does?), I'm happier now and more excited about what I'm working on than I have been in a long time.
Part of the reason for the change in my mood is the drastic change in the marketing industry. I hate to admit it, but I find social media marketing insanely boring. Viable, yes, and absolutely a necessary part of a larger marketing strategy, but mind-numbingly dull none-the-less. So when it got to a point at which all my...
